Google's Real Philanthropy... Their $10M Project 10^100!

If my last post about Google's new GMail option to help curb drunk emailing didn't seam noble enough, here's a truly great project... Google is offering $10,000,000 to people for ideas that will make the world a better place. Simple. Bold. Brilliant.

Project 10100 is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

And with the world seemingly taking a nose dive what could be better? So if you have an idea that could help people, tell Google about it, maybe you'll be awarded up to $10,000,000 to make your idea a reality. Ideas must be submitted by October 20th, 2008 though so get on it!

Google Aims to Curb Drunk Emailing!

Just when you thought they'd run out of ways to improve their industry-leading GMail email service, Google announces that they plan on offerring an optional service to limit users' drunk emailing activity. The new service was written by Google Labs Engineer Jon Perlow and will be called Mail Goggles! Hilarious!!!

Users can opt-in for the new feature, which will be activated automatically on weekend nights to help ensure you only send mail you won't later regret sending. As Jon writes in the GMail blog, "Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together."

The service will require users to confirm their email intentions by answering a series of simple math questions to try and ensure they're in an appropriate frame of mind for emailing. Where was this back in my college days?!?

For more info, please visit the GMail Blog...

-Aaron

Amazon to Offer Microsoft Windows/SQL Cloud Computing Services

Have you ever heard of "computing in the clouds"? If not, that's okay, probably no reason you should have, but it's an interesting new computing paradigm that is quickly gaining popularity.

Traditionally, companies maintain their own server equipment either within on-site server rooms or at outsourced colocation data centers. On-site rooms offer convenient access, but are expensive to build, maintain, cool, etc. Specially-built data centers offer a number of benefits, but don't work well for some companies. Now, a new option is emerging, virtual servers hosted "in the cloud".

Amazon has offered these virtual server systems and on-demand computing for Unix-based system for a while now, but just recently they announced they will soon offer Windows-based systems capable of running Windows Server and SQL Server. Now we're talkin'! The new offerring would mean that all of the cool Microsoft ASP .Net applications we create as a company could now run with Amazon's on-demand computing services. So next time ourselves or a client is thinking about building a brand new expensive server setup we can suggest they consider paying a very reasonable fee to rent some of Amazon's computer power in the clouds!

Google's "ELMAH" Error Logging Tool

Google continues to amaze us! This time we're impressed with their ELMAH tool (Error Logging Modules and Handlers). It's a developer tool that after a short amount of setup will allow you to easily record website errors to a database. The also provides developers with a large suite of tools that can be used to monitor, react, and report on errors. Some of my favorite features include emailing error info to admins and publishing an RSS feed of the last 15 errors.

My business partner, Andres Nava, has already started using the new ELMAH tool successfully in a production environment and I will begin doing the same for feature-rich websites and applications.

ELMAH represents yet another useful FREE tool from Google to help us web developers make the Internet a better place. For a full feature list and other information visit: http://code.google.com/p/elmah/.

-Aaron
