A 2008 Nielsen Online report released this past March shows that member communities, aka social networking websites like Facebook, now reach more people globally than email. The report continues by stating that the time spent on member community websites is drastically growing and that the fastest growing segment by age is the 35-49 demographic. These are decision makers with money and your company should engage them!

So this morning I put on my boxers with the little bicycles on them and rode my bike to work (sorry, TMI, hopefully you're ok)... I ride to work from time to time, but today I did it for Earth Day! "Going Green" has been all the rage lately so hopefully you're pitching in and doing your part. Plant a tree, clean a beach, or try not to print documents emailed to you if you can just read/use them electronically. Take your own grocery bags to the store, recycle more, etc...

Businesses are going green at an amazing rate, often because of the FINANCIAL savings they can acheive through using less energy, less paper, etc. We've specifically helped a few businesses implement more efficient electronic processes that get them away from old skool paper-based manual processes. In fact, THAT kind of stuff is really my favorite type of project! Maybe you have a similar situation...

Web Development is Picking Up...

After a painfully slow December, January, and February we're happy to say that things are looking a little brighter again. At yesterday's Huntington Beach Chamber Luncheon it seemed like the people I talked to had a similar feeling and outlook. A sense of normalcy is returning to us, at least among the business owners I've interacted with.

One of our clients, The Reynolds Group, has even found creative ways to try and significantly grow their business by capturing market share from competitors that have struggled to serve clients in these times. Their story, like many others planning to increase market share, are good examples of how to get through these economic times.

When times are good we often neglect to scrutinize many of our day-to-day procedures. If the procedure "works", we're happy, even if it's not the most efficient way of doing something. So ask yourself, "Are we servicing our customers in the most efficient way possible? Are we processing orders the most efficient way possible? Are we sharing data among employees and departments the most efficient way possible?" Look at your most important tasks as a business and review your processes for ways to streamline your business efforts. Often times you'll find ways to increase profitability through the smarter use of your human resources or technology.

Web-based self service customer support systems can be a great way to allow customers to interact with your business in an efficient way allowing them to self-manage many of their needs and also allowing them to contact you in an efficient way for items that need personal company attention. E-Commerce systems can help boost sales by offering a 24/7 automated storefront. Multi-user intranet database systems can replace cumbersome spreadsheets that usually slowly deteriorate into chaos as users tweak the spreadsheet for their own needs.

The bottom line is that technology can have a profound impact on your overall process efficiencies, either negatively or positively depending on how your business implements and leverages your IT resources.

Be More Efficient: Reviewing Your Marketing Efforts...
Sadly, many businesses do not accurately track the performance of their various marketing efforts. Without this information you cannot tell which marketing dollars are bringing home the bacon and dollars are going down the drain. Try to implement a way for your business to measure the performance of your individual marketing campaigns. If you're sending prospects and customers to your website, use different landing pages or "promo codes" or something that can help distinguish which campaign this customer took advantage of. Then periodically review your various campaigns and make educated decisions on which campaigns are worth continuing or expanding and which ones are slowly sucking you dry.

We hardly ever receive a fax, especially me personally from one of my clients. I'm really not even sure why fax technology is still around since most businesses have multi-function printers that can scan documents into PDF format which can then be emailed. That's what I do, SCAN and EMAIL. It's SO much better, people... Fax technology is old and the quality of what comes out of a fax machine shows it!

Microsoft's Azure Services Platform, Exciting Stuff!

So you THINK your new web app idea might be the next big thing... But you don't really want to spend $$$ on a large IT infrastructure, no problem! The many pay-as-you-go cloud computing platforms sprouting up have a deal for you. Amazon Web Services was one of the first and probably the largest right now, but Microsoft is investing MAJOR MONEY in their Azure Services Platform.

Being a developer of Microsoft-based systems built with SQL Server and ASP .Net, this upcoming offering from Microsoft is SUPER EXCITING! I recently attended four consecutive sessions of Azure-related presentations at the SoCal Code Camp held at CSU Fullerton on Saturday, January 24th. The topics covered everything from the Azure application model, data storage, integrated security, and a final overview that brought several Azure aspects together for a Social Networking application that is completely built for the Azure Cloud Computing scenario. The application used Windows Live ID services for login/authentication and Windows Azure for application hosting and dynamic data storage.

The idea is that you can start off small and pay almost nothing; and then as your application gains popularity the IT infrastructure that your application uses will grow and expand automatically according to how much it's being used. Your business will benefit from this success without having to worry about adding load-balanced web/database servers and other IT resources and you just pay for what you use, which in theory will be fine since the success is already there!

There's also a slew of related services, many within the long-running Live Services Platform, that can help your business use and share data more efficiently. The future is bright and Azure cloud computing technology could be as big of a game changer as the .Net Framework has been.

Reflections on What Inauguration Day Means to DezTech

MLK Day on Monday, followed by the inauguration of our nation's first African-American president on Tuesday, made for what must have been the most moving and inspiring Monday / Tuesday combination of my lifetime. Especially because Obama has instilled so much hope and vision into the American people. I heard an especially interesting comment that even people that did NOT vote for him in 2008 and that will NOT vote for him in 2012 are still feeling some sense of positivity brought by this momentous occasion and new beginning.

Evidence of this new beginning, in terms of business and "DezTech", came yesterday at our bi-monthly Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce Lunch Mixer. We had an OVERWHELMING turnout! I thought the first lunch of 2009 would be large with business owners looking to start 2009 with a bang, but yesterday's second lunch of the year was something else! Cindy Van Der Wyk of wemakeflags.com had brought small American flags for everyone and placed them on the tables. I quickly used the name tag sticker on my chest to help me wear my flag with pride. I then noticed many other people were doing the same and shortly we had everyone walking around with little US flags displayed on our chests. There's just something about this new guy that we like and seems to inspire us to do more and be better...

Obama called on us to WORK as a nation to pull ourselves out of the mess we helped create and I'd like to work hard this year to do my part! I hope to remember the last two days vividly and have them guide me throughout 2009 as I WORK for myself, my clients, and our country!

A Quick Search Engine Optimization Review...

Happy New Year everyone! I was recently researching some SEO basics and thought I would summarize them here for everyone's enjoyment! Well, let's jump in...

Your page's TITLE tag is the most important single thing. Write your title containing the keywords you want to target for the given page and keep the total length to around 60-70 characters.
The next most important thing are your HEADER tags (ie: H1, H2, etc). You should have only ONE H1 tag and it should generally match your TITLE tag or at the very least nearly match it such that it contains similar keywords. You can use H2 tags for secondary headers, and H3 tags as well, but the value diminishes quickly beyond the main H1 tag.
Use your keywords in the text copy of your webpage. This sounds simple, but it can be a bit more complicated than you think. It's VERY IMPORTANT that you frequently use your keywords within your content, especially towards the beginning. It's also important to repeat the keywords once at the end and if the page is long add another reference in the middle somewhere.
Text enhancements like BOLD and ITALIC should be used sparingly to highlight a keyword term where appropriate and they can help boost its ranking a bit.
META Tags aren't as critical as they used to be and only the DESCRIPTION meta tag is really used anymore. This META Description is often used in the search engine results and should contain the keywords used in your TITLE and H1 tags.
Use TEXT LINKS within your website to link from page to page. Using fancy graphical links is detrimental to your search engine rankings as search engine spiders index text links better. So consider using other CSS styling for your main navigation so that you can leave it as text links.
Here's the hardest part, but one of the most important tips... You need relevant links to your website from other related websites, especially if they're "high authority" websites. For example, if I ran a news site, getting a link to my site or news articles from a site like CNN.com would be HUGE!
Add and update your website regularly. The search engines like to see sites that are keeping their content fresh and adding to the site. Consider adding new pages on a regular basis or perhaps integrate some dynamic content to help keep your site updated automatically.

There's certainly a lot more to overall SEO and performing these tips on your website can require a lot of planning to do well, but the end result can be well worth it. We've recently achieved several first-page placements on Google for a couple clients just by following some of these basic tips! So make sure you're at least covering the basics or call us to see how we can help you out...

Slightly New Home for Our Servers...

A couple weeks ago we decided to move our beloved servers to a new home in the newer side of our data center. The move was literally from one of the data center's older cage arrangements to their newly built side of the building with all new cabinets. Exciting, right???

Well, maybe not, but we are very happy to be in one of their new cabinets, which are better organized and more efficiently cooled. We've had a very good track record with our uptime and this move should only improve that record.

My Slow 'Puter and 2.5GB Outlook PST File!!!

Good morning... Last night I finally had enough of the recent slowness of my laptop. It had just been crawling lately and I wasn't sure why. I figured that maybe it needed a defrag, but I know I ran one several months ago. The defrag report showed it wasn't too bad and that I did NOT need it, but I was desperate and did it anyways as I imagine it shouldn't hurt. No noticeable difference...

Next on my list of possible culprits was my gigantic Outlook PST file. I hadn't archived in a while and my main PST file was 2.5GB! So I threw all of my 2007 mail into a new Archive_2007.pst file and then ran Outlook's compacting function. The combination of the two processes moved ~1.1GB of mail out of my main PST file and shrank it down to a much more reasonable ~1.4GB. Outlook certainly seems faster and I think the improvement also helped the overall performance of my machine. I'd guess that my laptop was constantly busy screwing around in the Outlook file looking for stuff that it didn't leave enough juice for the rest of the laptop.

Sometimes networking events can be a hit or miss thing and it seems like lately they'd swayed a bit on the "miss" side UNTIL TODAY. Today's first-time meeting at Rodrigo's Mexican Grill was a big success in my eyes. Microsoft announced today a new program that would give new businesses less than 3yrs old and making less than $1 million a chance to use their most popular software and services for nearly free. Their new "BizSpark" program will give participants access to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscriptions, Visual Studio tools, Windows, SQL Server, SharePoint Server, Exchange Server, System Center and more. Participants will also have access to Microsoft's upcoming "Azure" cloud services. The cost will be a $100 fee when the company "graduates" from the program at which point they will need to begin paying normal pricing for their software and services.

Great New Dev Tool: NetRenderer

Perhaps the most annoying aspect of HTML/CSS development is the differences in how browsers render your code. It is very difficult to create a complex page and have it look the same in all of the major browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari, etc). To add to the frustration a PC cannot have both IE7 and previous versions of IE installed simultaneously so it makes testing your work difficult.

That is why a tool like NetRenderer is so important! It's a website that will show you a screenshot of your website in various versions of IE. I just used it to fix a few IE6 bugs in a new website we launched for CRI Business Systems (www.CRIBusinessSystems.com). After a few minor tweaks and about 20mins I had it all sorted out and my NetRenderer IE6 screenshot is looking great!

In 2001 we became Deztech Consulting LLC and have had quiet success throughout the full ten years.

If my last post about Google's new GMail option to help curb drunk emailing didn't seam noble enough, here's a truly great project... Google is offering $10,000,000 to people for ideas that will make the world a better place. Simple. Bold. Brilliant.

Project 10¹⁰⁰ is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

And with the world seemingly taking a nose dive what could be better? So if you have an idea that could help people, tell Google about it, maybe you'll be awarded up to $10,000,000 to make your idea a reality. Ideas must be submitted by October 20th, 2008 though so get on it!
